Planning permission for the construction of a 72-bedroom Chichester care home has been confirmed, thanks to the efforts of Colten Care Ltd and specialists .
Chichester planners approved the development after a spec, designed by Sherlock Boswell architects, that embraced a traditional design, including flint stone panels, facing brickwork and a tiled roof. The plans also make the most of scenic surroundings to create landscaped gardens, which will include a sensory garden ideal for residents diagnosed with dementia.
With construction due to begin on land that was part of the former Roussillon Barracks, care home provider Colten Care believe that holding a public exhibition to get the perspective of the local community was an essential factor in the planning application’s success.
Development director Paul Finn comments: “We are very pleased to have secured such a premium site for what will be our 21st home, offering a mix of residential, nursing and dementia care. We build and operate care homes to the highest of standards and with each of our schemes pride ourselves on forming an important and integral part of the local community to the benefit of our residents.”
As well as residential care in en-suite bedrooms, residents will also have access to hotel-style restaurants and lounges, incorporated to offer a luxury lifestyle at the same time as supporting a positive social and community environment.
Managing director of Tanner & Tilley, Peter Tanner, also commented: “The approved scheme is the result of considerable team effort and the close consultation and negotiations with the council’s officers. The proposal will provide much needed accommodation to provide for the needs of Chichester’s increasing elderly population. The architects have achieved a design and layout that will positively contribute to this part of Broyle Road whilst respecting those immediately neighbouring properties.”
Permission had already been granted for 252 dwellings on the former barracks site, where military operations ceased in 2008, with the new care home designed in association with ZeroC marking the next stage of its redevelopment.
