Silver Birch Lodge care home, in West Lancashire, has a number of training initiatives in place to enhance the skills of their workforce, from which even managers are not exempt.

Owner Joan Parr believes a personal development strategy is essential in making the most of each employee’s potential and has even set up her own training company, Holt Green Training, to make sure the home’s staff remain up-to-date with modern capabilities and innovations.

Commenting on the initiative, Ms Parr spoke of her delight at how the training opportunities were embraced by managers, saying: “I am very proud of their success, they each worked extremely hard – which has now paid off.

“I recognise that, as well as ensuring staff exceed the level of care required by the CQC, by developing personal skills such as effective communication, senior staff work more efficiently and ultimately ensure greater standards of care are delivered.

“Our staff are our most valuable asset, we’re committed to supporting them through personal and professional development opportunities.”

Silver Birch Lodge is a thirty-one capacity residential care home which is a sister company to Holt Green Training, a company set up after Ms Parr discovered a lack of training opportunities in the region.

The Level 3 in Management and Leadership qualifications undertaken by both care and catering staff are accredited by the Chartered Institute of Management (CMI) and focus on areas that include skills development, appraisals, decision-making and communication.
