The amount the NHS contributes towards the costs of a place in a care home where nursing is required has been increased.
Last week the Department of Health announced an increase of one per cent in funding, which will see the standard rate rise to £109.79 per week and the higher rate rise to £151.10 per week.
The funding is for people in a care home who have been assessed as needing the help of a registered nurse.
The English Community Care Association has welcomed the decision, which came into effect immediately, but thinks timing of announcements about the funding need to be made earlier.
Chief executive Professor Martin Green said: “Whilst welcoming this news we must get the assessment of rates and the announcement into a fixed timetable for future years.
“The announcement needs to be made in February to give providers time to notify residents and do the necessary cost adjustments prior to 1 April.
“In addition there should be an agreed review of the rates in partnership with independent sector providers so that there is a clear understanding of care home costs before any decisions are made by the Department of Health on the rates.”
