Care UK, one of the UK’s largest care providers, are delighted to have opened a new state-of-the-art care home, in Colinton.

Designed by renowned architect Richard Pollock, whose work at Stirling University has been influential in informing the practice of dementia care, Cairdean House consists of nine self-contained flats and is registered for 90 residents.

Stylish interiors include retro-style fittings, designed to mimic former family homes in a way known to be beneficial to adults with memory loss, while the home also boasts a spa, cinema and hairdressing salon.

Home manager Helen Kinnaird, says: “We have been very pleased to welcome the first residents to Cairdean House. It is a superb facility, designed specially to meet the different needs of the people who will live or stay here.

“We have provided a wide range of facilities in an accessible way, incorporating residents’ interests and memories which will enable them to maintain confidence and independence.”

Supporting an active lifestyle, further additions include rooms for crafts and fitness programmes, while the surrounding gardens have been designed by landscape architect Annie Pollock with residents in mind.

Ms Kinnaird continues: “The aim has been to blend practical considerations with homely detail and I think we have achieved that.

“People living with dementia often find walking a calming pastime but at the same time they can find large spaces and noise intimidating, so Annie has incorporated interesting walkways and outdoor spaces into the garden design with a focus on creating tranquillity and quiet.

“Of course, the gardens have been created for all the residents, not just those living with dementia and I’m sure they will give hours of pleasure to everyone who lives here.”

Care UK operates over 100 care homes throughout Scotland and England.
