Parker Meadows, in Fareham, has chosen National Care Home Open Day to highlight the impact that modern technology can have on older people’s lives.
One of many providers marking the occasion across the country today, the home is showcasing multiple ways that residents in care can transform their lives through technology.
Home Manager Geraint Williams comments: “At Parker Meadows we believe that there is a huge amount that can be done with modern recreational technology to make older people’s lives better.
“The Technology Gap with the older generation is becoming increasingly large and this is impacting on their quality of life, that is why we are championing Technology during the National Care Home Open Day and our subsequent weekly Technology Club for all of the elderly people that live within our local Community in Fareham and Portsmouth.
“As part of the National Care Home Open Day we at Parker Meadows are doing our bit to banish myths that our Seniors cannot enjoy the benefits of technology and we will be doing this with the very same equipment that is already a daily part of the residents’ lives in Parker Meadows: PCs, iPads and Kindles.
“We will spend the morning championing the benefits of technology to the older generation and then showing them how to actually use it to improve their daily lives, whether it is online shopping, reminders on their phone or something simply for fun we will be covering it.”
The itinerary includes computer tutorials taking place in the Internet café, while a number of dementia-friendly I Pad Apps created by the Bournemouth University Dementia Institute (BUDI) are available, a digital photography masterclass, digital books and Skype training.
Mr Williams continues: “Technology is nothing to be afraid of. It has the power to connect older people to the wider world no matter where they are. Imagine how incredible it is when a grandmother can see her grandson on Skype who might be living many thousands of miles away.”
