The gruelling 56 mile race began at 5am in Durban and involved running through 31 degrees heat to Pietermaritzburg.

Mr Jeffery, who managed to finish the race in eleven and a half hours, said: “I raised £15,000 in total, £10,000 for the Alzheimer's Society and £5,000 for the mental health charity, Mind. I just thought that to ask for so much money I would need to do something out of the ordinary so this fitted the bill.”

Angie Ryan, manager of Park View Care Home, said: “We are delighted to be able to celebrate Robert’s achievement with him, and to be able to contribute to such a worthwhile charity which offers support to families as well as those suffering an illness which underlines the ethics of Park View.

“As well as the donation to the Alzheimer`s society, Robert has also raised another £5,000 that was donated to Suffolk MIND, with whom we are working closely to offer support sessions to residents, their families and staff.”

The Jeffery family are founders of Caring Homes Group and First Care Homes.
