A professional body of specialists promoting the health of older people in the UK has welcomed Colin Nee as their new chief executive.

The British Geriatrics Society (BGS) has over 2,750 members worldwide including doctors, nurses, allied health professionals and scientists who all have a particular interest in the care of older people in the UK.

Mr Nee will take up the post in January and start work to continue the BGS’s aim to improve the quality of health care for older people.

The BGS president, Professor Paul Knight said: “I’m delighted that Colin will be joining us. His appointment marks an exciting new phase in the development of the Society. He will help us to influence policy makers regarding the complex health and social care needs of older people, and to reach out to like minded organisations within the wider health, social care and charity sectors.

“Colin brings an exceptional track record within the charity sector, both nationally and internationally, having led the development of a number of award winning charities.”

Mr Nee will leave his post as the interim executive director at the human rights charity Reprieve where he has been since 2010 to join the BGS. Previously Mr Nee has worked as the executive director of international HIV/AIDS information charity NAM Publications from 1996-2001 and was the chief executive of Charities Evaluation Services from 2001 to 2010.

The BGS’s most recent work was the report Guidance for Commissioners, published to detail what services need to be in place to meet the health needs of older care home residents in the UK.

The BGS has also called for more training in geriatric medicine for the current health care workforce to ensure older people with complex health needs receive the highest level of care possible.
