Rose Court Care Home in Manchester received a very special visit from Rusty the donkey from The Donkey Sanctuary animal charity.

Rose Court Care Home secured a very special visit from the Donkey Sanctuary and their famous member, Rusty the Donkey. Rusty is no ordinary donkey, he is specially trained to interact with people indoors. The residents very much enjoyed petting the donkey, and couldn’t believe their eyes when they saw a donkey in their lounge! Rusty was very well behaved and as a treat the residents were even able to feed him an apple. The afternoon was hugely enjoyable and the residents couldn’t stop smiling.

Rusty’s visit brought back fond memories for one of the residents whose childhood was spent on a farm in Ireland. Rose Court’s eldest resident who is soon to be 101, also said that Rusty reminded her of Christmas. When Rusty left Rose Court the residents sang the song “little donkey”.

The Donkey Sanctuary charity raises awareness and educates participants about these wonderful creatures and Rose Court generously donated £50 to this worthy cause. The tactile feel of the animals can also act as a form of therapy and helps residents interact and share new experiences.

HC-One Rose Court Care Home Manager, Karen Davies, said:

“It was brilliant to see the residents enjoy Rusty’s visit to Rose Court. It was a very interactive experience, and residents will be talking about it for weeks to come!

“Residents had great fun petting the lovely donkey, many for the first time. The Donkey Sanctuary do some wonderful work and their visit brightened up everybody’s day. We hope to see them again soon!”

HC-One Regional Managing Director, Liz Whyte, said:

“The Donkey Sanctuary is a great therapeutic and sensory experience for the residents. Organising memorable activities such as this one is part of HC-One’s aim to provide the kindest care.”
