Phase two of a three-phase development to bring more extra care accommodation to Derbyshire is now under way in Alfreton.

From the combined vision of the Chevin Housing Association, a member of the Together Housing Group, and Derbyshire County Council, Maple Mews is a 52-apartment scheme that is designed to support ‘Easy Living’ for adults over 55 with some care and support needs.

Chevin Housing Association’s Managing Director, Amanda Garrard, is delighted with progress, saying: “People are our business and we are immensely proud of this partnership with Derbyshire County Council.

“We want residents to enjoy their retirement. They can live independently with the added benefit of having a ready-made community on the doorstep and fantastic facilities, with a superstore close by.

“The development also means that with our contractor Willmott Dixon, apprentices are being given fantastic work experience and the local community is also benefitting through a boost to the economy.”

Councillor Kevin Gillott attended the start of construction work, saying: “This will be the sixth extra care scheme the county council has developed in partnership and it is really exciting to see its progress.

“Maple Mews has the opportunity to offer a great service to residents at the scheme and people living in the neighbouring community. With the excellent design of the building and by offering 24/7 on-site care and support, it will promote independence, well-being and dignity.

“It is also very important to us as a local authority that new developments like this help to stimulate the local economy, and we are really pleased that local suppliers are being used and local people are being employed on the development.”

The Maple Mews design include a choice of social areas, as well as beauty and bathing suites, a restaurant, hairdressing salon and guest suite.
