Enhanced communication and information flow between care workers is the focus of a new care management system implemented at The Royal Alfred Seafarer’s Society, in Surrey.

A home that specialises in nursing solutions for retired seafarers, The Royal Alfred’s nurses and managers are now equipped with tablets that enable speedier contact between team members and more convenient day-to-day note taking than a handwritten system allows, using digital technology to log any specific care and medication requirements.

Delighted that her care home is among the first in the UK to embrace this new technology, manager Anne Kasey comments: “Introducing the new system has helped our staff tremendously. All entries are automatically named, timed and dated as well as being easy to read, unlike some handwritten versions.

“We’re also able to contact staff through an easy to use electronic messaging system. Not only does it make recording and communicating easier for us, but it benefits residents’ families as clear information is easily accessible.”

Expert training sessions have been carried out to make sure care workers are well-positioned to make the most of the new technology, with one-on-one training available for any staff who need more advice adjusting to digital capabilities.

The records are also available to residents’ loved ones, enabling all parties to be better informed as to each client’s current condition and requirements.

Soon to celebrate its 150th anniversary, The Royal Alfred Seafarer’s Society is proof that residential services can continue to move with the times and embrace modern technology to support quality of life as thoroughly as any new builds.
