Site inspections of two extra care developments, in Carmarthen and Ammanford, have confirmed that work is progressing well on bringing this modern and versatile form of provision to the county.
A joint project, developed by Carmarthenshire County Council and the Family Housing Association, the two sites, costing £24m, are on course to welcome their first residents in Spring 2015.
Councillor Jane Tremlett, the executive board member for health and social care, was among those to attend the inspection of the Carmarthen site, alongside council leader Kevin Madge and local member Alun Lenny.
Having recently confirmed extra funding for the Ammanford development, councillor Tremlett commented: “We are committed to providing new, modern, care facilities for older people in Carmarthenshire, which will benefit residents and care staff.”
“It is pleasing to see the progress at the former Argel site in Johnstown which looks set to be completed on target, and I look forward to visiting the Gwynfryn site in Ammanford shortly.”
The Extra Care schemes have been designed to support an active and independent lifestyle, as well as offering access to professional care. Self-contained apartments are being built alongside additional facilities that include guest suites, craft and hobby rooms, meeting rooms and communal areas.
Demonstrating further commitment to modern care facilities, the council is also drawing up plans for another site in the Llanelli area, for which £7m has already been set aside.
