Bupa has opened a new care home in Cardiff, with the help of its new residents and school children from nearby Whitchurch Primary School and Whitchurch High School.
Joyce Mitchell, 88, Eileen Jones, 86, and Valerie Evans, 84, cut the ribbon of Bupa’s Heol Don Residential and Nursing Centre in Whitchurch, Cardiff, alongside Janice Evans, the home manager and Andrew Cannon, managing director for Bupa Care Services.
Pupils from the neighbouring schools helped to name some of the care home's communal areas by taking part in a competition to create artwork for the home. Successful entries include the cinema room named the ‘Picture House’ and the family room, named ‘Cwtch’, Welsh for ‘cuddle’ and ‘safe place’.
Janice Evans, home manager at Bupa’s Heol Don Residential and Nursing Centre said: “It’s really exciting to be opening the home and welcoming our first residents.
“I look forward to the months and years ahead as we welcome many more wonderful people here.”
Christine Scanlon, the sister of new resident, Valerie Evans commented: “When my sister moved to Heol Don I knew she would be in safe hands.
“We were given a fantastic welcome by everyone and this has put Valerie completely at ease. It’s made the whole experience much easier.”
The new 78-bed care home offers residential and nursing care, as well as catering for people living with dementia. Bupa made an £8.5m investment into building the home which features a cinema, hair salon, activity suite and children’s play area, as well as sensory gardens for residents to enjoy.
The home expects to create up to 100 jobs once the home is fully occupied.
Andrew Cannon, managing director for Bupa Care Services who attended the official opening said: “We are excited to be opening our new home in Cardiff which will help provide residential, nursing and dementia care for people in the surrounding area.”
