Birch Green Care Home has been welcoming members of the public into the home to enjoy tea, coffee and cakes while spending time in the home’s new Bistro café.

The dementia specialist care home, located in Skelmersdale in Lancashire, launched the ‘Tea for Two bistro’ which has become a popular place for residents to spend time in with their friends and family in an informal environment. Members of the community have also been welcomed into the café, which is open daily from 2-5pm.

The home hopes the bistro will continue to grow in popularity and become a key part of the community for people to meet their friends and remain a favourite place for the home’s own residents to spend time in.

Birch Green, general manager, Carol Nickeas said: “The bistro is a special place for everyone associated with Birch Green, and means families and friends can share their own experiences and also benefit from the knowledge of our dementia advocates at the same time.

“We want to remind the local community that if anyone else wants to get involved they will be warmly welcomed as there’s always lots to do at the bistro as it’s a hive of activity.”

The bistro was opened by author and campaigner Ian Donaghy who has also run a number of training sessions at the care home for the team of staff.

Mr Donaghy has written the book ‘Dear Dementia: The Laughter and Tears’ which provides information on dementia for those interested in learning more about the disease expected to affect over one million people by 2021.

Birch Green Care Home provides holistic person centred care to its residents which include people with dementia, respite and nursing care. The home is part of the Springhill Care Group which runs two other care homes in Bristol and Lancashire.
