Leaders in the care sector will be coming together at the conference 'Safeguarding Adults in Care Homes and Hospitals' to share their knowledge and experience on promoting safe care.
The Community Care conference on Tuesday 2 December at Holiday Inn, Bloomsbury in London will examine how the public and private sector can work proactively together to promote safe care in hospital and residential care homes.
The pace of policy change has been enormous for adult safeguarding professionals in the last few years. Many are really struggling to keep up with implementing the legislative changes alone, in the face of on-going resource issues.
Changes to adult safeguarding in residential settings (care homes and hospitals) have been driven by recent historic scandals (including Winterbourne View and Mid-Staffordshire) and subsequent Department of Health commissioned reviews (Berwick; Francis, and Keogh) to improve the quality of care for patients and service users.
Since the last Community Care conference on this issue, there have again been some huge pieces of work and policies introduced that will affect safeguarding professionals from both care and health (including the NHS).
This event will focus on four key themes:
• Preparing for a new framework to support safeguarding in care homes and hospitals
• Transparency issues: Focus on the treatment of whistle-blowers and the future of surveillance
• Meeting the legal requirements: Key components of the Care Act 2014 and Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards
• Driving quality care and wellbeing: Beyond making safeguarding personal
High-profile speakers are taking part in the event, including Hazel Watson, head of Mental Health and Learning Disabilities, NHS England; Sally Warren, deputy chief inspector, Adult Social Care (London), Care Quality Commission; Dr Adi Cooper, strategic director, Adult Social Services, Housing and Health and Gary FitzGerald, chief executive of Action on Elder Abuse.
