A care home in Gateshead is celebrating two recent successes after receiving an excellent report by the Care Quality Commission (CQC) and is undertaking a full renovation to improve services for all of its residents.

The Akari Care home, Philips Court is one of several homes chosen by the group to receive a complete refurbishment as part of a £15 million investment initiative.

A previously un-used room has been converted into a 1960’s themed diner and all bedrooms are being decorated to make residents feel even more at home.

The manager at Philips Court care home, Karleen Taylor-Williams, said: “Philips Court is going from strength-to-strength; we’re thrilled with the outcome of the CQC inspection, which is testament to the hard work and dedication of our staff.

“The environment of a care home is extremely important and has a major impact on the lives of residents and needs to be safe, fresh and comfortable. The residents are especially thrilled with the new 1960s diner in the home and love looking at all the memorabilia that we have collected.

“This major investment will have a positive impact on the home making it even more appealing and, above all, will offer an even more comfortable standard of living for our residents.”

The home is also celebrating passing an unannounced full inspection by the CQC and has been recognised for offering quality care. The areas recognised include providing a safe and suitable environment for care, ensuring the care and welfare of service users, whilst meeting all standards for staffing and support workers.

The Akari Care home provides nursing care for older people, specialising in care for people living with dementia and Alzheimer’s.

Akari Care operate 39 care homes within the UK, each home has a team of professional and caring staff who recognise each service user’s individual needs.
