For the fifth year running, Hallmark Care Homes has signed up to be an official partner with Love British Food, which runs British Food Fortnight.

As part of the two-week celebration of traditional British food, the residents will again hold a Great British Pie Off. This involves groups of residents making pies from different countries, but only using British ingredients.

Roy Garland, hospitality services manager for Hallmark Care Homes, which has 17 homes, said: “During British Food Fortnight, we actively promote the sole use of British food during the fortnight. The effect this has on the residents and teams within each of the homes is extremely valuable.

“Residents remember British food and like to see it included in the daily menus. The British Food Fortnight helps focus our talented chefs on producing the meals daily, but it doesn’t stop there. Throughout the year the use of fresh seasonal British produce is paramount in our menus. In addition our chefs use local suppliers wherever possible which in turn keeps the community link open.”

Hallmark care home residents have also been involved with initiatives such as the Great British Picnic, the Great British Breakfast and menus and dishes from days gone by.

“Love British food is really about promoting British food for our residents which in turn, helps with their diets and increases the amount of food eaten. “Traditional meals utilising seasonal British produce is what older people remember and the smells from cooking these foods will often trigger happy memories from their past,” added Mr Garland.

British Food Fortnight takes place on 19 September – 4 October. For more information go to http://www.lovebritishfood.co.uk/
