Nurse Shauna Rooney from Rush Hall Care Home in Limavady, Northern Ireland, won this year’s Infection Control Award at the Nursing Standard Nurse Awards held on Friday 1st May at the Savoy Hotel in central London. Nurses from across the UK celebrated clinical excellence and innovation at the award ceremony hosted by comedian and actor Rufus Hound.
Shauna said, ‘Our residents were often unaware of potential risks because of their dementia. I wanted to use my knowledge to reduce infections by providing local expertise and support, to raise awareness at the home and encourage staff to improve their practice. And from a personal perspective I wanted to develop my leadership skills. The most important thing was the positive effect on the residents’ wellbeing.’
She credits support from Four Seasons Health Care and her home manager. ‘I got it from the top. I also had the head housekeeper as my wing woman.'
Nurse Jane Bell, who manages the care home, says the team is hugely proud of Shauna, ‘Her work has had a tremendous impact on our residents as it continues to ensure no-one suffers from an infection that can be prevented. She has also proved that the care home sector provides quality life enhancing care. We are delighted that this nomination recognises the quality of our nurses.’
