A robotic pet that purrs, feels and moves like a cat has been created to offer companionship to older people.

Designed with built-in sensors that allow a life-like response to a person’s strokes, hugs and tickles, Hasbro’s Joy for All Companion Pets are on sale for $99, (£65).

Sold with the slogan ‘Why should kids have all the fun?’ the pet makes older people feel relaxed, happy and less alone upon hearing the cat meow softly in response to their touch.

When its owner strokes the tabby’s back, it purrs happily. If its cheek is stroked, it nuzzles its head in their hand. If you keep stroking it, it rolls on its back for a belly rub.

The more you stroke the cat, the more relaxed it gets and may soon close its eyes and sleep.

The cat is also easier for older people to look after in their own home. Unlike other cats, owners won't need to empty out the litter tray or have to worry about an allergic reaction to the cat's realistic fur.

If left alone, the cat goes to sleep but may wake up if someone moves nearby.

The battery-powered tabby cat comes in cream, silver and orange and has been described as being a soothing presence by its new owners, who often engage in conversation with their new pet.

One lady who spent time with the cat said: “It’s so relaxing, it does it just relaxes you completely.”

Testimonials on Hasbro’s website include a comment from the daughter of one owner.

She stated: 'When [my mom] started petting that cat, [she] said that it felt like love. That just touched my heart, because she's so full of love, and it's nice that she can have some in her life.'

The cat is toy maker Hasbro's first foray into products designed specifically for older people. The company said it was inspired by feedback highlighting the appeal of certain Hasbro toys and games for older people. The robotic toy follows research which included interviews with carers and care workers across the US.

"We heard from seniors across the country that companionship was important to their happiness.

"Many live alone, miss having a pet, or are no longer able to care for a pet," said Ted Fischer, vice president of business development at Hasbro.

"While it's not a replacement for a pet, the Joy For All Companion Pet cat is a life-like alternative that can provide the joy and companionship of owning a real pet, without the often cumbersome responsibilities."

This is not the first time, a robotic animal has been designed to give comfort to older people.

Sussex Partnership NHS Foundation Trust is working with the University of Brighton to explore the therapeutic benefits that PARO, a robotic baby seal has to people living with dementia in hospitals and care homes.

PARO has sensors enabling it to react to touch and sound and costs around £4,000. It can also ‘learn’ and respond to the names patients and users give it.
