A Worcester care home is undergoing a major six-figure refurbishment programme to help transform the lives of its residents and those living with dementia.

The first phase of the project at Northwick Grange has been completed and includes a redesign of the care home’s bedrooms and an overhaul of its bathrooms – adding new en-suite facilities, wet-rooms and improved disabled access for the residents.

Commenting on the progress of the project, Kelly Gatfield, manager of Northwick Grange, said: “We are thrilled that the refurbishment programme is now well underway.

“It’s a major investment but when completed early next year many of our rooms will be equipped with modern, first-class facilities. That will really help our residents to live and relax in comfort.

“Many of our residents are in the early stages of dementia, but our new-look bedrooms and bathrooms will enable them to live more independently, which will in turn give their families peace of mind that their every need is being taken care of.”

According to Alzheimer’s Society, 850,000 people in the UK are living with dementia and 80 per cent of those living in care homes have a form of dementia or severe memory problems.

The redesign of the Old Northwick Lane home aims to support the resident’s independence and incorporates the latest design approaches recommended for dementia care, including improved lighting and additional space.

George McNamara, head of policy at Alzheimer’s Society, has previously highlighted the importance of dementia friendly care homes offering personalised care. He added: “More than two thirds of people living in care homes have dementia, so it is important that all care homes are dementia friendly with specially trained staff who understand the complex needs of people with dementia.”

The refurbishment at the residential home is being carried out in two stages, with the final phase of the overhaul set to begin this New Year.

Northwick Grange Care Home is part of the Redwood Care Homes Ltd based in Worcestershire. The home specialises in personal and nursing care for older people and those living with dementia or physical disabilities. The home is currently registered with the Care Quality Commission (CQC) to accommodate up to 30 residents.
