Experienced care specialist Tracy O’Sullivan who has been appointed to run Redwood House Residential Home in Worcestershire, plans to get the residents, many of whom have dementia, to help look after the home’s flower beds and herbs.
She wants to make full use of the Barnt Green home’s two-and-a-half acre grounds to promote well-being amongst residents.
“Working with people in residential care gives me the opportunity to be really hands on, and alongside making sure our care is of the highest standard, I want to introduce more well-being initiatives that people enjoy.
“A huge part of that will be the holistic benefits of being outdoors – something which will help all residents, especially those with dementia. Already I’ve seen how much residents enjoy gardening and I intend to take that to a different level this Spring by making more of our gardens and getting residents involved in caring for our flower beds and herbs.”
She added; “Getting outdoors, enjoying the sights, sounds and smells, does wonders for people living with conditions such as dementia. They can be powerful triggers for memories and that makes them essential tools for people who may otherwise have difficulty.”
Ms O’Sullivan has 16 years’ experience in the care and adult support sector and is currently working towards the nationally-recognised Registered Manager’s Award.
Owned by the Clarendon Care Group, Redwood House is registered with the Care Quality Commission for 27 residents. It provides specialist care for the elderly and is a recognised specialist in dementia and Alzheimer’s care.
