Pupils from St.Thomas More Primary School, Saffron Walden presented a superb collection of poems to the residents of Highfield Care Home, Saffron Walden on Tuesday 15th March. The children, aged between 6 - 11 years recited poems that they had written on the subject of their grandparents.
Mayor of Saffron Walden, Cllr Heather Asker, was invited to judge the event and pick a winner from 11 poems. After much deliberation the Mayor could not separate the poems as they were all beautifully crafted and delivered with great clarity and emotion. The appreciative audience agreed with the Mayor’s verdict and each of the children will receive a prize for their efforts.
“Today, all the children are winners! The poems were very moving and residents really enjoyed the experience. Mixing these generations within our community is very healthy and it enables important skills to develop within the children,” said Cllr Heather Asker.
Maintaining and enhancing links with the community is vital to the well being of the elderly who no longer find it easy to socialise and interact as they once did. The activities programme at Highfield Care Home ensures these links remain strong and diverse.
