George Watkins, a former football player for Newcastle United and resident at Derwent Care Home, recently celebrated his 72nd birthday with two of his friends and old team-mates, Bobby Moncur and David Craig.
George played for Newcastle United Juniors from the age of 15-21, primarily as centre forward. In 1962, the team ‘tackled’ their way through to the final of the Football Association (FA) Youth Cup and took home the trophy, defeating the Wolverhampton Wanderers.
During the latter part of his football career, George played for the Newcastle first-team, alongside his team-mates Bobby Moncur, best known for his role on the pitch as captain, and David Craig, who played in defence. Bobby has since managed various teams across the country, including Hartlepool United and Plymouth Argyle, before becoming a Newcastle United club ambassador. He currently sits on the Newcastle United board and commentates the team’s matches on local radio.
Celebrating in the local pub with a birthday pint in hand, George commented, “The years I spent playing football were some of the best years of my life and today has been very memorable for me”.
