A care home in Worcestershire recently took part in Cupcake Day, an Alzheimer’s Society initiative which helped to raise money for those living with Alzheimer’s disease.

The cupcake challenge, inspired by the BBC’s Great British Bake Off, took place at Welland House Care Centre, to raise money for the charity and fund future trips out for the residents.

Care home manager Jeanette Bedford said: “It was great to have so many of our staff involved in such an important cause. Many of our residents have Alzheimer’s disease and this funding will go towards special trips out.

“We decided to up the stakes by trying to see who could come up with the craziest flavour of icing. The cakes were so good I think one or two might fancy themselves as the next Mary Berry.

“As well as having a fantastic time, it was also a good excuse to eat lots of cake.”

Local violinist Sarah Amery entertained residents at the home while staff baked a delicious range of cupcakes, which were enjoyed by many.

Welland House Care Centre is owned by the Worcestershire-based Redwood Healthcare Group and provides care for 51 residents, many of whom are living with the disease.

Alzheimer’s disease is the most common cause of dementia and currently affects 520,000 people in the UK.

Many celebrities, including BBC's Great British Bake Off judge and Paul Hollywood, Ruth Jones, comedian Jo Brand and chef Lorraine Pascale have backed the campaign, which encouraged people to bake, sell or buy cupcakes at events across the UK.

Every cupcake sold will help Alzheimer's Society find a cure for dementia, fund vital services and campaign for the rights of people with dementia.

Donations worth £60 can pay for a dementia research-focused blood test and £20 can pay for someone to attend an Alzheimer’s Society Dementia Café for one month.

Commenting on the importance of the Cupcake challenge, Alzheimer’s Society supporter Paul, said: “I've seen the pain that dementia has brought to friends of mine and I want to do all that I can to raise awareness of how people can help.”

Jeremy Hughes, chief executive officer of Alzheimer’s Society added: “It is hard to find someone whose life hasn’t been touched by dementia in some way. That’s why Alzheimer’s Society is working so hard to find a cure, fund services and campaign for the rights of people with dementia.

“Whether you bake, sell or simply buy as many cupcakes as you can, join the cupcake crusade to raise money and help us defeat dementia. Every cupcake counts.”

Cupcake Day launched on 16 June in partnership with woman&woman. People wishing to join the fundraising can download the starter kit here: https://cupcakeday.alzheimers.org.uk/?_ga=1.82183126.1342349517.1461579597
