Care home residents across the North East will be voting in their own EU referendum when they choose their evening meal on 23 June.

Chefs at will be preparing one British meal and one European meal across the care homes, giving residents the chance to choose which dish they would prefer.

Chris Bonner, head development chef at Helen McArdle Care, said: “Each month at Helen McArdle Care we hold food activities and celebrations which are themed around current events; this month the referendum was the obvious choice.

“As the majority of our residents may not be able to physically get to the polling station, we wanted to bring our own referendum to them.

“We spend a lot of time developing our menus and have seen a big difference in how tastes have changed over the years, so I’m excited to see the results.”

The resident’s food preferences will be counted at the end of the day to see whether British or European meals are favoured.

Throughout the day there will also be many activities surrounding the referendum, including recreated polling stations and reminiscence activities.

Many residents across the 17 purpose-built care homes have voted for the EU referendum by post, and some will be visiting polling stations throughout the day.
