Care home residents learn digital skills with iPad course

Residents of a Nottingham care home have proved it’s never too late to learn new skills, after completing a course in using iPads.

People at Elmbank Nursing Home have been learning about Apple tablet technology as part of a project delivered by community learning experts, Creative Paths.

Residents at the home used the iPads to learn more about different topics including arts and crafts, gardening, music, travelling and baking.

They created and researched projects and reminisced using the tablet computers, which led them to growing their own flowers, making pottery, playing instruments and looking up photographs of their old schools and favourite holiday destinations.

Isabel Mantle, care home manager, said: “The iPad course has brought a lot of enjoyment to our residents, sharing stories, competing, comparing outcomes and laughing, leaving them with long lasting feelings of wellbeing.

“None of our residents have ever used an iPad so it was fantastic to see them taking to the technology so quickly.

“The course was of particular benefit to residents either living with dementia or wanting to keep their minds sharp by learning new skills. Following the course we are now looking to purchase several iPads with which to build on the training.”

Elmbank is a registered nursing home for people with dementia including Alzheimer’s and physical disabilities associated with old age.

The home is part of privately-owned Redwood Healthcare Limited and is registered with the Care Quality Commission as a care home for 35 residents.
