The sequins and heavy eye make-up are not obligatory but dancing in the spirit of Strictly Come Dancing absolutely is when it comes to people living with dementia, who are being invited to shimmy across Blackpool’s iconic ballroom.
Whether it be the fiery, flirty Cha Cha or the long, flowing glide of a Waltz, the movement and style are up to the dancers on 14 October, as people with dementia and their carers take centre stage at Blackpool Tower Ballroom.
Hosted by Blackpool Council, which is keen to make Blackpool a ‘dementia friendly’ town and promote activities for those with dementia, the Dancing with Dementia event is now in its third year.
Which Strictly star will show up this year?
The stars of the BBC's Saturday night show Strictly Come Dancing dazzled and inspired audiences at last year’s event. The council managed to secure Strictly Come Dancing stars Kristina Rihanoff and Robin Windsor in 2015 but council officials are remaining tight-lipped about which Strictly dance pairing will trip the light fantastic at this year’s show.
Councillor Amy Cross, cabinet member for reducing health inequalities, said: “The number of people with dementia is steadily increasing in the UK and is a particular issue on the Fylde coast due to the ageing population, which is why we need to reach out to ensure that people are equipped to recognise the signs of dementia within family members and friends.
“Dancing with Dementia provides a perfect platform to raise awareness and provide information on this complicated condition.
“The event is open to all members of the public as we want to discuss how to improve the lives of carers and people with dementia as well as involving the wider community to work out how best to approach this growing problem.
“We were delighted with how popular the Dancing with Dementia event proved to be last year – more than 500 attended including many people who deal with dementia on a day-to-day basis. We’re hoping that as many people will attend this year’s event as possible.”
Semi-professional dancers from the local area will also take to the floor and mingle with the public. Tickets cost £9.50 per person and guests can also enjoy afternoon tea and dementia-friendly activities.
The Dancing with Dementia event at the Blackpool Tower Ballroom takes place on Friday 14 October at 11am until 3.30pm.
