WCS Care Group has had its fifth care home in a row rated Outstanding by the Care Quality Commission.

Newlands care home

The not for profit group which runs 12 care homes has added its Warwickshire home, Newlands, to its elite group of care homes which have all been given top marks by inspectors.

Newlands in Kenilworth, cares for up to 26 people with physical disabilities, with inspectors finding staff were caring and compassionate and people were given safe, responsive, caring, effective and well-led care.

Acosia Nyanin, CQC’s head of inspection for adult social care in the central region said: “We were impressed with what we found during our inspection of Newlands and inspectors found that the service had a strong, person-centred culture and was exceptional at helping people to express their views.

“People told inspectors they enjoyed living at Newlands and considered it their home. They valued their relationships with staff and felt staff went the 'extra mile'. Staff were seen to treat people with respect and dignity and they supported people to maintain their privacy and independence.”

Innovative and creative

Newlands was praised as being “innovative and creative” and striving to improve the quality of people's lives by working in partnership with experts.

Andrea Sutcliffe, chief inspector of adult social care, commended WCS Care Group for its five top ratings, saying: “We have rightly set the bar high for services to be rated Outstanding. It is good to see excellent leaders who value and care for their staff and focus on a truly person-centred approach meeting that high standard and providing great care for the people they support.

“Everyone deserves to experience care that we'd all be happy for any of our loved ones to receive.”

Christine Asbury, chief executive for WCS Care, said the staff at their care homes “always go the extra mile”.

She added: “We’re delighted that Newlands has become our fifth home in a row to be recognised as outstanding by the CQC – it’s a fantastic achievement for people living and working at Newlands, who are incredibly proud of their home. However, we won’t be resting on our laurels – we’re always keen to push the boundaries of innovation and find new ways of responding to the ambitions of residents, so that every day is a day well lived.”

WCS Care is an active member of the National Care Forum (NCF), which represents the not for profit care sector.

'Phenomenal' achievement

Vic Rayner, executive director of the National Care Forum, added her voice to the chorus of praise for WCS Care, saying: “I am very pleased that all the hard work of the WCS Care leadership and staff has been recognised by the CQC.

“The achievement of one outstanding rating is no mean feat, so to have five services in a row rated as outstanding is quite phenomenal. In reviewing the CQC report, the strong message that stands out for me is how passionately those living at Newlands express choice and control. I am also pleased that this report highlights the growing role of technology in enabling people to develop and sustain independent fulfilling lives.

“Having visited a number of WCS Care services, I have seen first-hand how both the leadership and the care provision are demonstrated by all staff throughout services.”
