Brunelcare’s Deerhurst Care and Nursing Home has been awarded an overall rating of ‘Outstanding’ by the Care Quality Commission, after an unannounced inspection last November.

Currently, only one per cent of care homes within the UK have obtained this rating.

Inspectors said: “The service and staff demonstrated their commitment to care for people with dignity, to further improve and to follow best practice for the care of people living with dementia. The service was very well-led and well managed. The provider continually looked to make things work better so that people benefitted from an improved service.”

Comments from residents during the inspection included ‘Staff are so very kind and caring’, ‘The staff are hard-working and cheerful’, ‘The staff are creative’ and ‘It’s home from home here’.

The CQC also spoke to a relative who said: “The care is amazing.”

Deerhurst is a Dementia Care Matters Butterfly Service home, meaning it has achieved a recognised national standard in dementia care, providing person-centred and relationship focused dementia care. In October 2016 Deerhurst was awarded the Dementia Care Matters ‘Quality of Life’ award, for the fourth year running, also achieving the highest level - Level 1 for exceptional person-centred dementia care.

Deerhurst Care Home is a large purpose built home which provides accommodation, personal and nursing care for up to 66 people. The home specialises in caring for people living with a dementia and care home manager, Lesley Hobbs, was awarded the Dementia Care Inspiring Leader award at the National Dementia Care Awards 2016.

Staff have also worked hard to build strong links with the local community, keeping residents involved with the area. Students from local colleges and schools, along with local volunteers, visit frequently and spend valuable time with the residents and staff.

Lesley Hobbs, manager of Deerhurst, said: “I am really proud of everyone who lives and works here. It’s a team effort; all down to everyone who lives, works, visits and supports Deerhurst. The CQC report is a true, feeling-based reflection of everything we strive to achieve.”

Jan Little, Brunelcare’s director of care homes, echoed her sentiments, saying: “I am absolutely delighted for the staff at Deerhurst, to have achieved so much over the last few years and getting an outstanding in 4 of the 5 areas is just the icing on the cake for them and a testament to their hard work. I am extremely proud of all the staff and volunteers who support the people who live at Deerhurst, they truly are an amazing team.”
