Care home managers are being encouraged to nurture both their compassionate side and their commercial awareness side in a new book.

The guide ‘The Compassionate and Commercially Aware Care Manager’ is edited by Dr Richard Hawkins, editor-in-chief of Caring Times.

It includes sections on Understanding Compassion, Commercial Awareness, How Care Homes are Funded, Budgets and Finding Clients to Fill Your Home, and is designed as a reference manual with checklists and a self-reflection part.

Richard Hawkins said: “The care home manager has one of the toughest jobs imaginable. Compassion and caring are demanded in spades but at the same time the manager is expected to run a commercially successful small business.

“Many have argued that the two are incompatible but we argue that compassion is the bedrock of high quality care but only by being commercially aware can the manager generate the resources to be able to provide that kind of care.

“And at a time of considerable pressures of all kinds we would encourage managers to nurture both qualities.”
