Elderly people and care staff got a soaking when a water fight broke out at a care home after residents were handed toy guns to fire at each other at will.

Armed with their new weapons, the residents aged 80, 90 and beyond took to the new activity… like a duck to water… in the garden of The Oaks Care Home in Blyth.

Eighty-four-year-old Dennis Allen said: “It was great. I loved it.

"My sister was here and she enjoyed it too.”

Water balloons were also exploded in the garden which also featured a paddling pool and a bubble machine.

Not just for kids

Ann Mielnik, home manager at The Oaks Care Home, said: “Who says water fights are just for kids?

“What a great laugh for everyone. It certainly cheered us all up. Something very simple to bring a smile and some joy to everyone.”

However, more than a few staff were forced to take cover when the activity began and residents let rip.

Ninety-one-year-old Anne Wallace who took pleasure in lobbing more than a few water balloons at staff and residents, said simply: “It was lovely" adding "I loved the big bubbles".

The water fight took place at the care home run by Hill Care Group to celebrate World Water Week, which runs from 26-31 August.

The annual event is organised by the water institute SIWI to raise awareness of global water issues.

In 2018, World Water Week addressed the theme “Water, ecosystems and human development”. Last year over 3,300 people from 135 countries participated in World Water Week.
