A 94-year-old man with dementia has achieved his dream of scoring a penalty at Notts County home ground, with the video of the event going viral with nearly one and a half million views.

Roy going in for his first shot. Wearing a Notts County strip with ‘Roy 94’ on the back, Roy Prentice finally got his lifetime's wish to score a penalty during half time at last Saturday's home match. As an added bonus for Roy, Notts County won 2-1 against Crewe.

At Meadow Lane Stadium Roy received a hero’s welcome as he approached the penalty spot. Staff from the Landermeads Nursing Home in Nottingham helped him in his wheelchair.

The pensioner became an internet sensation on Twitter when a post on the Notts County FC account went viral. It stated: “Here's the moment 94-year-old Roy, who's living with dementia, fulfilled a lifelong dream by scoring a penalty in front of the @AirITLtd Kop on Saturday!#DEMENTIAisAteamGAME”

His first attempt narrowly missed the goal, however, Roy finally hit the back of the net on his second attempt and he had the crowd jumping up and down in the stalls in excitement. Roy's family were also there to cheer him on and had traveled all the way from Spain to show their support.

The game was organized by Dementia is a Team Game, which is the brainchild of dementia speaker Big Ian Doughty.

The Twitter video has received nearly one and a half million views on Twitter and was shown yesterday on Good Morning Britain by Piers Morgan and Suzanna Reid.

Fans were clearly moved by Roy's determination to score a penalty. @jamesmoose321 wrote: "This is just amazing. Literally, tears in my eyes #DEMENTIAisAteamGAME missing my grandad royboy"
