A care home in Worcestershire that has supported a resident and former nurse to administer her own medicines has been rated ‘outstanding’ by the Care Quality Commission (CQC).

Perry Manor Care Home celebrates CQC 'outstanding' rating

Inspectors praised staff at Perry Manor for using resident's individual care plans to ensure the care and support meets their particular needs, and which makes them feel valued.

Staff achieve this by offering residents support in ways which are special to them, including one resident who had had a career as a nurse and has been supported to administer her own medicines.

The report states: “The resident was proud of their career as a nurse and felt staff had supported her to be in control of her own pain relief which was very important to her.”

Perry Manor, which opened in 2014, has also been praised for effectively communicating with residents to make sure they feel understood. The warmth of touch is used by staff where they recognise it as appropriate for each individual.

One resident told inspectors, “the staff seem to know all about my background and the manager is very tactile and will give me a hug when she sees me."

A relative also explained how important personalised care was to their family member. They told inspectors: "Mum was also a very tactile lady, and the staff were always giving her cuddles which brought such a smile to her face…. again, something that doesn't work for everyone, but the amazing thing about Perry Manor is that the team really know their residents and tailor their care accordingly."

’Staff are not just there for the care stuff, but for the human stuff too’

Family members and friends have praised the management and staff team who ‘without exception are caring and compassionate’. One family member told inspectors: "The staff are lovely, nothing is too much trouble – all the care staff are marvellous. They are not doing it for the sake of doing it, they've got the right personality."

Another added: "The staff are marvellous, really friendly and take time to talk to you. I have been really down and tearful on many occasions and they are there for you when you really need them to be. Not just for the care stuff, but the human stuff too."

Care home manager, Katherine Matthews, continues to proud of her staff team, adding: “I’m over the moon the CQC’s inspectors have rated us outstanding. My team constantly strives to create the very best caring and supportive atmosphere for the residents here at Perry Manor. It’s brilliant to have our hard work recognised by the national care regulator.

“I’m incredibly proud of the team, and our outstanding rating just shows the dedication and commitment every one of them has to making Perry Manor a fantastic place to live. I would like to say thank you for their hard work – something which I know is echoed by the residents and their families here at the home.”

Perry Manor care home has become Care UK’s fourth CQC ‘outstanding’ rated service. The purpose-built care home provides 24-hour residential and nursing care, and supports residents to continue living a fulfilling and enjoyable life.
