Sir Norman Lamb took to Twitter this week to announce his ‘sad decision to stand down as MP after 18 years’.

The 61-year-old MP said his decision was motivated by a desire to set up the Sir Norman Lamb Mental Health and Wellbeing Fund with his wife Mary, which he launched on 27 August.

“Today I am announcing a very painful decision that I am standing down at the next election as a member of parliament for North Norfolk, having put body and soul into this job for over 18 years.

“It’s a really difficult decision for me but I want to focus my efforts on the issues that I’m passionate about, particularly the cause of equality for people with mental ill health and those with learning disability and autism.

“I’m announcing that we’re setting up a fund to support people in Norfolk. To support their mental health, their wellbeing and to support people with learning disability and autism and also to focus on suicide prevention."

In response, Simon Bottery, senior fellow at Kings Fund tweeted (@blimey simon) of Mr Lamb’s departure: “This is real loss to the House of Commons and its understanding of #social care."
