Care home appeals to public to send 100 cards for Nancy's 100th birthday

Care workers are appealing to the public to post birthday cards to care home resident Nancy Danson and hope she'll receive 100 cards to make her 100th birthday celebrations extra special.

Nancy Danson turns 100-years-old on Monday, 21 October but staff at De Brook Lodge care home in Manchester, only have 50 birthday cards so far.

As a result, they have launched a public appeal for more birthday cards for Nancy in a final push to reach the 100-card target in time.

Danielle Aikenhead, the De Brook Lodge lifestyle manager, said: “Nancy has lived with us for a year and she’s part of the De Brook Lodge family.

“As she gets ready to celebrate such a major milestone, we wanted to show Nancy our love and support by collecting 100 birthday wishes from far and wide.

"With the support of our residents and the local community, we can give Nancy a 100th birthday to remember.”

Nancy Danson was born in Warrington but has spent most of her life in Flixton, Greater Manchester and has four sons.

De Brook Lodge, run by Ideal Carehomes, provides 24-hour residential and dementia care for up to 52 people. The care home is hosting a birthday party for Nancy with surprise activities and the Mayor of Trafford will give her a card from the Queen.

This is not the first time care workers have appealed for birthday cards for the people they care for.

Winnie Blagden, would have only had contact with the outside world via home care visits, if it had not been for the efforts of her care workers, who made her world famous thanks to their appeal for birthday wishes.

An appeal on Facebook by home care agency Serenta Homecare to celebrate Winnie’s 100th birthday went viral after strangers heard about Winnie, who lived alone and had no relatives.

Winnie from Sheffield, received cards from all over the world and the actor Dustin Hoffman and even Prime Minister David Cameron got involved to send birthday messages.

Not just cards but flowers and other gifts and offers from strangers to take Winnie out, arrived.
