Care workers in care homes and home care agencies across the UK are raising money to assist people devastated by the Australian bush fires.
Staff at Healthcare Homes, which has 37 care homes in East Anglia and the south, along with 12 homecare branches are raising money for the Australian Red Cross in time for Australia Day on 26 January.
Fancy dress, Australian-themed quizzes, a ‘name the koala’ event and even a kangaroo hop race are taking place in care homes including Norfolk’s Meadow House nursing home.
Peterborough’s Park House Nursing Home will serve up a traditional Anzac cake on 23 January, while Suffolk’s Haughgate House made craft items on 25 January to donate to animal charities.
“We have been absolutely devastated by the images from Australia,” said Anthony Beorby, operations director (Care Homes) at Healthcare Homes Group.
“We can only imagine what the local communities have been going through when dealing with this unprecedented natural disaster, and it is awful to see the impact this is having on the natural landscape and the country’s incredible wildlife.”
Details of Healthcare Homes Group bushfire fundraising events can be found on the group's Facebook Page.
Mr Beorby added: “As a group, we have a strong commitment to charitable causes and many of our homes proudly fundraise throughout the year. We’ve therefore been very keen to show our support in whatever way we can.
"I would ask anyone near to a home that is hosting a fundraising event to consider popping along, or to join our efforts in contributing to the Australian Red Cross, which is doing such wonderful work to support those affected.”
