Play your Cards Right was a popular TV game show hosted in the 1980s and 90s by Sir Bruce Forsyth. The show was watched by the masses and families would regularly join in from their front room - in some households, it became a bit of a family tradition.

The residents living at Winifred Dell are no strangers to the show either, so Lifestyle Coordinator, Clare, hosted her own version with residents at the care home.

The game was very simple, nine cards were placed on a board, with the first facing up and the rest facing down.

Residents were asked to guess whether the next card would be higher or lower than the previous card. If it was correct, the player would move on to try and guess the next. If it was wrong, their turn would be cut short and the next player would make a guess.

Prizes were on offer for the winners which added some light-hearted competition and encouraged others to get involved.

The residents really enjoyed playing their own version of this nostalgic game. Whilst playing, many fond memories were shared as well as some of their favourite moments from the original show.

At the end of the game, the winners were given the choice of sweet, savoury or healthy snacks. They each chose their favourites and sat back down to spend some more time with their friends.

Games like this not only bring back positive memories but also exercise the residents’ cognitive functions and encourage group engagement. The most important thing is that everyone enjoys it, which was confirmed when a request was made to repeat the game during a recent meeting with the residents.

We look forward to welcoming other nostalgic games to the residents’ schedule and hearing about the memories and special life moments that are recalled.
