Walcot Hall residents enjoy VE Day

To mark the 75th anniversary of VE Day, Walcot Hall nursing home near Diss held a special celebration for its residents.

Staff dressed in 1940s' -style outfits and the home was decorated with VE memorabilia, with help from residents who made paper chains in patriotic colours.

A special army vehicle was on display in the home’s grounds and residents were able to enjoy the sunshine in the gardens, while reminiscing about their VE Day memories.

As part of VE Day, the home has also launched a special project which invites local children to send in questions to residents about their VE Day memories for any school history projects or as part of a home-learning exercise.

They are asking young people to write to the home and ask residents about VE Day, their experiences of the 1940s or the end of WWII – or even special VE Day anniversary celebrations that have taken place in more recent years. Letters will be shared with the residents and their answers will be filmed and posted on social media.

Home manager Sue Doherty explains: “We all had a lovely day – the sun was shining and so we were able to go into the gardens. The team looked fabulous, dressed in 1940s-themed clothing and Jane, one of our activities coordinators, did a marvellous job as a hairdresser for our residents. A delicious lunch was served and we had a special commemorative cake made too.”
