In just a few months, the Care Workers Charity has managed to reach its £2m fundraising target so it is now able to give even more grants to care workers in need due to COVID-19.

Care workers have been on the frontline during the pandemic caring for the most vulnerable people in our society. The fund was set up to financially support care workers who are shielding, self-isolating or unable to work because they have contracted coronavirus. The charity reached its initial fundraising target of £1m back in May but decided to up the target to £2m so it could reach even more people in need.

The fund is an emergency grant programme offering grants of between £200 to £500.

Karolina Gerlich, executive director of The Care Workers’ Charity said: “Thanks to the CWC team who have worked so hard and the support of our trustees, we have now reached our epic target of two million pounds.

“We have been overwhelmed by the sheer demand for grants, something that I do not see an end to anytime in the near future. Without our charity and the kindness of people donating to the fund many care workers would be facing a very difficult time right now. We are a lifeline for most and very happy to be able to confidently help our care workers knowing we have the funds to do so.”

Organisations that have helped CWC hit its target include Barchester, Borough Care, Hallmark Foundation, HC One Ltd, Home Instead, Julia & Hans Rausing Trust and Sekoia.

Ms Gerlich added: “Our care workers are some of the lowest paid workers in the country. Many who are self-isolating receive at best statutory sick pay, others none. Some are going into debt and others are going hungry, and all for doing the right thing.”

The CWC vision is for no care worker to face financial hardship alone in the UK.
