John used to visit his wife in her care home daily until lockdown restrictions kept them apart, so he recorded a message telling her loved and missed her.
The period of lockdown has been particularly challenging for his wife Susan, a resident at Georges Court care home in Cambridge as she was used to her husband who she has been married to for 61 years, visiting her every day.
The couple have two children, five grandchildren and a great-grandchild.
A spokesperson for Excelcare, which runs the home, said: “When the restrictions were enforced, it was a challenging time for them both, but knowing his wife was being protected and well cared for helped to keep John at ease. However, he wasn’t prepared to let the restrictions stop him from showing Susan that she is always on his mind.
“After speaking to lifestyle coordinator Kayleigh, she agreed to record John as he said a message for his wife. A few tears were shed and you could hear the emotion is his voice as he said he loved and missed her.”
Kayleigh then took the recording and played it to Susan who was relaxing in her room. “Her eyes lit up when she heard his voice. It was a touching moment and one that helped to boost Susan’s spirits,” according to the care home.
John has also done a number of other thoughtful gestures throughout the lockdown period to remind Susan he’s thinking of her.
This includes putting a collection of pictures in a photo frame for her, to look at each day and reminisce with. A note, which he wrote in her favourite diary, so she could read it and refer back to his loving words whenever she felt down.
Susan owned a music box that still took pride of place in John’s bedroom, so he filled it up with roses that he had grown in the garden and delivered it to St George’s Court. It filled Susan with delight when she heard the memorable tune from the music box and the aroma of fresh roses when she opened it up.
Kayleigh placed this in front of the fan in her room, so the smell would fill the air as the music played, revealed Excelcare.
