Residents at West Abbey enjoyed 'talk like a pirate day'

Residents at West Abbey Care Centre in Yeovil had a barrel of laughs on ‘talk like a pirate day’ on September 19th and shared a list of items they would take if they were stranded on a desert island.

International ‘talk like a pirate day’ falls on September 19 and is a parodic holiday created in 1995 by John Baur (Ol' Chumbucket) and Mark Summers (Cap'n Slappy), of Albany, Oregon, U.S., who proclaimed this day to be when everyone in the world should talk like a pirate.

Staff at West Abbey Care Centre decided to embrace the spirits of the day by ensuring there was eyepatches and pirate hats for all, as well as an abundance of treasure to be found dotted around the home. Residents also enjoyed a sing-song to some sea shanty tunes and talked about the pirates who are famous (or infamous as the case may be!).

One resident at the home said that he wouldn’t be able to go on an island without very strong sun cream, while another said that she would probably have enough survival skills to get by, but their one luxury item of choice would be a fishing rod.

Helen Colaço, general manager at West Abbey Care Centre, said: “It was an exciting day for us all but thankfully no-one was made to walk the plank! We played a treasure hunt game in which residents marked an ‘x’ on a map to find a treasure chest, and the winner received some special chocolatey treasure.

"We are continually adapting, and finding new ways for residents to enjoy a variety of life enrichment activities, including in this instance, talking like a pirate!”

We are welcoming new residents into our homes to ensure that we are there for those that need care and support, and have a very clear admission policy and infection control protocols that must be met. Please do give us a call on 01935411136 if you are looking for care or need any further help.
