A care home visitors' lodge that can clean itself has arrived in Reading to allow family visits to continue during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Shinfield View Care Home installed the self-cleaning lodge to ensure residents could meet with their family and friends, while still following government guidelines.

The visitors' lodge cleans itself as soon as a visitor presses a button when exiting it.

The door closes and the room's 'Automatic Sanitisation System' then starts. The room then fills with a chemical which kills 99.9 per cent of all germs.

Care home manager at Shinfield View care home, Amanda Tanner said: "It's really a fantastic investment, and has enabled us to allow safe visitation once again between residents and their loved ones, and in total comfort".

Before entering, visitors' temperatures are checked on arrival and they are then led to the lodge in the garden.

The lodge is divided down the centre by a Perspex screen with residents sitting on one side and visitors on the other. Visitors and residents have separate entrances.

A hearing loop and intercom has been installed in the air-conditioned lodge to enable residents with hearing impairments to hear even at a distance.
