The Dementia Journey, a virtual support session.

The Orders of St John Care Trust (OSJCT) specialists in dementia care held a virtual event to provide carers with support and advice following a dementia diagnosis.

Our Admiral Nurses (specialist dementia nurses) talked about the importance of gaining a dementia diagnosis, the help and support that is available and signs that your family may need to seek some extra care or support for their loved one living with dementia. They also looked at the most common types of dementia and how they differ from each other.

Following on from recent virtual support sessions that have been run by OSJCT Admiral Nurses they found a common theme; families were asking for support on the full journey that a dementia diagnosis may take you on.

The virtual event was well attended by families who are caring for a loved one at home and also by local professionals. Many of the local professionals who attended left their details for families to reach out to them to use their free services or gain further local support. Admiral Nurses are registered nurses who specialise in dementia care and work collaboratively with families and care providers, sharing their expertise and giving them the support and skills needed.

The session was followed with a Q&A session providing carers with an opportunity to ask the Admiral Nurses any individual questions and signpost family members to community support.

Winsome Barret-Muir, a family carer who attended said, “I think training like this is important for everyone with a family member who is living with dementia”
