Residents at Kirkwood Court, residential and residential dementia care home, in Newcastle Upon Tyne, have been very busy over the past month. Here is what they have been up to.
Kirkwood Court started off its activities on the 9th of February, celebrating World Pizza Day! This was a great day to celebrate as everyone loves pizza!
Residents enjoyed making and creating their own pizzas for lunch! They rolled out the dough, spread the tomato puree, sprinkled on the cheese, and added their desired toppings. Lots of residents opted for chicken and onion on their pizzas.
John Hepple, a resident, commented: “I enjoyed sprinkling the cheese on top of my pizza the best. It was great fun, and I would love to do it again.”
The pizzas were handed over to the kitchen to be cooked. Once they were all ready, they were served to each of the residents. It was such a fun activity, and the residents absolutely loved the homemade pizzas and said they would love to do more activities like this.
Tasting the homemade pizza was the best part of the day! Margaret Richardson, another resident, remarked, “It has been such a laugh making our own pizzas from scratch, I love getting to try them at the end.”
Then on the 14th of February, Valentine’s Day rolled around.
Residents love Valentine’s Day and especially enjoyed receiving a card from the staff. The day was filled with lots of arts and crafts.
The crafting was followed by a wonderful Valentine’s Day themed meal, and the dining rooms were decorated beautifully.
resident, Ruth Miller, said, “This dining room looks amazing! Beautifully decorated.”
The food was excellent, and everyone loved it! Pam Corr, a resident, commented, “Love is in the air, it was lovely to have a meal with my closest friends!”
Closely followed on the 1st of March, was Pancake Day!
Shrove Tuesday is a day enjoyed by everyone at Kirkwood Court.
The trolley was loaded with lots of different toppings such as fruit, chocolate, sauces and squirty cream. Residents were keen to try all the different toppings on offer and test out all the combinations. Resident, John Topping, said, “This is the best day of the year, I loved choosing what to have on top of my pancake, there are so many options!”
The pancakes went down a treat and the residents were so happy! Tom Robinson, another resident, added, “I loved having a pancake today, it was a lovely treat. We should do this more often it was great!”
And finally, to top off what had been a fantastic few weeks, a celebration was to be had!
Residents, Arnold and Alicia celebrated their 70th Wedding Anniversary!
Arnold's room was decorated with banners, balloons, and photos of the couple. The couple were joined by their two daughters and their granddaughter to celebrate such a special day.
Everyone was passing by their room congratulated them and gave them their best wishes. The residents enjoyed reminiscing about Arnold and Alacia’s life together. “70 years, wow! That’s amazing that they are both here together to celebrate such a special day!”
Arnold and Alacia received many cards and presents. They even received a card from the queen, which was beautiful. They had two beautiful cakes which were shared to all the staff and residents to enjoy.
The couple had such a lovely celebration of their marriage. Alacia, remarked, “This has been such a special day, we can’t thank the staff enough for celebrating the day with us!”
Angela Douglass, Care Home Manager, commented, “Wow what a fun time we have had at Kirkwood Court recently. It has been great to see all the residents take part in so many fun activities. Also I was honoured to be a part of Arnold and Alacia’s special day, they are an inspiration.”
