Quarry Hall Care Home in St Mellons, Cardiff, was visited on Friday 1st July by MS for Cardiff South and Penarth, Vaughan Gething, Minister for Economy, as the home welcomed visitors and guests from the local community to the home to participate in this year’s Care Home Open Week celebrations from 27th June to 3rd July 2022.

The 86-bed stylish care home, offering residential, nursing and dementia care, which is owned by HC-One, was delighted to open its doors to celebrate Care Home Open Week with Residents, Colleagues, friends, family, and the wider community.

Care Home Open Week is a national event hosted by Championing Social Care, designed to connect care homes with their local communities. This year, homes across the UK enjoyed being able to celebrate with communities in person again, having marked the annual event virtually during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Residents and Colleagues of the HC-One owned home enjoyed meeting MS for Cardiff South and Penarth, Vaughan Gething and chatting to him about what life is like at Quarry Hall – which is an integral part of the local Cardiff community.

Quarry Hall’s chosen theme for this year’s Care Home Open Week was ‘Summer Celebration’. Throughout the week, Residents, Colleagues, families and friends enjoyed a variety of fun-filled activities which were enjoyed by all.

Wellbeing Coordinator Heather Wilcox organised the event which included having a singer from local music company ‘Musicare’ in the morning, and another local activity company ‘Rise’ joining in the afternoon, to provide some sports and exercises.

Visitors also enjoyed learning from Colleagues in the home about what a rewarding career in care looks like and finding out about opportunities for community engagement and volunteering roles to support their local care community.

With families being able to take part in these types of events, they are able to understand more about how the home works, and what Colleagues are proud to offer to the Residents.

David McMullen, a Relative of a Resident living at Quarry Hall, commented: “It’s so nice to be able to do something with our dad and see everyone enjoying themselves, we are happy that we were invited to take part.”

Carla Arcanjo, Home Manager at Quarry Hall Care Home, said: “We were delighted to welcome MS Vaughan Gething to our home and open the doors of Quarry Hall again to welcome in our local community and bring everyone together to celebrate Care Home Open Week 2022. Everyone had an amazing time.

“We are proud to support St Mellons, and our Open Week celebrations provided a great opportunity to reconnect with our local community after the challenges of the pandemic, to support community engagement, and to remind our local community that our kind care teams are here if they ever need support for themselves or a loved one.”

MS Vaughan Gething, Minister for Economy, said: “It has been a difficult couple of years for the care home sector. I was therefore delighted to have been invited to visit Quarry Hall today as part of Care Home Open Week 2022. It was a pleasure to meet with residents and staff and have the opportunity to personally give my thanks to the staff for their hard work and dedication. I look forward to visiting again in the future.”
