Perfectly timed in the middle of a heatwave, staff and residents at Barchester’s Chester Court care home in Bedlington had a fantastic time celebrating National Ice Cream Day on July 17th, a brilliant excuse to sample lots of cooling treats.

Activities Co-ordinator Lauren Corbett booked an ice cream van to come to the homes car park to celebrate the day. Staff and residents were delighted when they heard the classic chimes of the ice cream van from inside the home. Everyone ordered a variety of different ice creams, from sugar cones to classic 99s, to ice cream tubs, magnums, ice lollies and much more!

General Manager, Sarah Kelly, said: “It wasn’t just the residents that were excited when we found out there was a National Ice Cream Day, the eyes of the staff lit up too! Who doesn’t love ice cream? We have all had a great time, it was a wonderful way to keep cool in the heat.”

Julie, a resident said: “I absolutely love ice cream! There really isn’t anything nicer on a hot summer’s day. I haven’t had ice cream from an ice cream van in years! It was lovely to be able to experience this again, I got a vanilla sugar cone with a flake and lots of strawberry sauce, and it was delicious!"

Our varied life enrichment programme keeps residents active, and provides a daily choice of engaging physical, mental and spiritual activities tailored to residents’ interests and abilities.
