Residents at a care home in South West London sharpened their pencils and dusted off their rubbers to sketch a ‘nice handsome’ man and smash a few myths about how they spend their days.

Sherwood Grange care home likes to entertain with a difference. Residents are empowered to take up any activities they fancy from day trips to France to attending the opera so when they requested another opportunity to draw a nude model after a highly successful session in 2019, the team immediately set to work to make it happen.

The staff from the care home employed a professional model for the afternoon to pose after residents were asked what kind of model they preferred, and almost unanimously said a ‘nice handsome man’.

When staff asked resident Mollie Wheeldon what she enjoyed most about the session, she said: “I can’t answer that. It was great fun to do something different, I found it very relaxing.”

This is not the first time Ms Wheeldon who is an art lover has taken part in this activity. In 2019, the care home operated by Care UK organised a professional model after Ms Wheeldon, as well as other residents at Sherwood Grange care home, made a request for a nude model to help them get in touch with their creative side.

'We certainly ‘bared’ all'

Residents at the care home have also visited France to do sketching and watercolour painting of a lake and several life drawing classes have already taken place at the care home but all involved models with their clothes on.

Kristina Jacunskiene, home manager at Sherwood Grange, said: “We certainly ‘bared’ all at Sherwood Grange with our memorable nude art class.

“Most people expect life in a care home to be a certain way but here at Sherwood Grange we’re keen to ensure that there are no limitations, and every day can be different and fun.

"Life in our care home is all about helping people to enjoy more independent and fulfilling lives and today that meant doing something out of the ordinary and creating a memorable experience.

“Sadly the session had to draw to a close but based on the response we had from the residents and the fabulous drawings they created, we will certainly be welcoming more models in the future!”
