Jim Hawkins, aged 81, has finally wed his sweetheart Lynne at his care home after 42 years together - admitting he decided to get married because he’s “getting on a bit”.
Jim and Lynne Hawkins married at Grevill House care home in Cheltenham, just months after Jim moved there.
Early in their relationship, Lynne proposed to Jim but he turned her down. However, Jim recently had a change of heart and agreed to get married.
‘We have been through thick and thin’ says Lynne
Mr Hawkins has dementia and moved into the care home, run by the Orders of St John Care Trust (OSJCT), in the summer as his care needs increased. Lynne, aged 64 also has health issues and is currently undergoing treatment for cancer.
Jim Hawkins said: “I’m ready, and I’m getting on a bit!”
Lynne Hawkins said the secret of their long relationship is: “Friendship and love through thick and thin, and we have been through thick and thin.”
The couple first met in the Cotswolds when they lived in the same road in Bourton-on-the-Water. Their first date took place in the local pub and they later had a son together called James.
Lynne Hawkins said: “It means the world to us both to finally be married for our remaining time together.”
Staff at the care home launched a JustGiving page to help raise funds for the couple’s wedding. Family, residents, staff and guests attended the wedding at their care home and, while staff organised the decorations and drinks for the toast, the catering team made the couple’s wedding cake.
Su Heller, manager at the care home, said: “It has been an absolute privilege to support Lynne and Jim with the plans for their wedding day.
“Everyone here at OSJCT Grevill House is thrilled to see this declaration of their love and affection for each other.
“Even in the later stage in life, love and romance can thrive.”
