Lucy Freud visited the Royal Star & Garter - Surbiton care home on two occasions, where during the first session, she helped residents paint a field of poppies using acrylics and during the second session, residents painted a sunset and silhouettes.

She said: “I was amazed at just how talented some residents are at the home, their paintings were beautiful.

"Painting focuses the mind and is very meditative, and I could see that with the residents during the sessions.” Ms Freud, great-granddaughter of eminent psychoanalyst Sigmund Freud, studied for her BA Hons degree in Fine Art at the University of the Arts, Wimbledon, having gained her foundation diploma in art and design at the Wimbledon school of art.

Her art works have been auctioned by Christies, Bonham’s and Sotheby’s and she has also worked on private commissions.

This year, the Royal Star & Garter’s Remembrance campaign called ‘They gave their all for us’ highlights how young some of the charity’s residents were when they joined the Armed Forces.

Resident Vera said: “I didn’t know I could paint! I enjoyed the session and think Lucy is a wonderful teacher.”

Royal Star & Garter was founded in 1916 to care for the severely injured young men returning from the battlegrounds of the First World War.

Today, the care home provides specialist nursing, dementia and therapeutic care, and a varied and engaging programme of activities, enabling residents to remain independent and enjoy life.
