Flickering Flames to LED Lights

In the hush of winter's twilight glow, I ponder the Christmas I used to know, Simple pleasures, with family near, A love that warmed, dispelling fear.

Back in the forties, when I was a child, Christmas joy was warm and mild, A simpler time of humble cheer, Yet, love and joy were always near.

Tinsel sparkled, though not as bright, Candles flickered in the silent night, Austerity danced with festive glee, In post-war Britain, we hung our tree.

No LEDs or screens to glow, Just carollers singing soft and slow, Woolly jumpers, mittens snug, A humble feast, a grateful hug.

Mince pies baked from worn out pages, Of recipes passed down through the ages Plum pudding, stodgy, rich with spice, Wrapped in paper, knotted twice.

Crackling fires, where tales are told, In the warmth of the glow, memories unfold, Children huddled by the flames, Dreaming dreams, and playing games.

But as the years have gently rolled, A modern tale, now being told, Plastic baubles, flashy lights, In this new age, there's new delights.

Gone are the days of yesteryear, Of paper chains and home brewed beer, Yet, in their place, a vibrant scene, Of technology, with its dazzling sheen.

Skype calls with loved ones near and far, Virtual hugs, like a guiding star, Old traditions, a faded hymn, Yet, new ones rise, like seraphim.

Gifts wrapped in metallic sheen, On a screen, a festive scene, Amazon boxes, swift and bright, Delivering joy through day and night.

And in the quiet of my room, I sit, Reflecting on this changing script, Through the ages, Christmas has evolved, Yet, the heart of it has not dissolved.

For in the glow of each passing year, Love's ember holds its atmosphere, From the wartime past to present day, Christmas spirit finds its way.

So, here I sit as Christmas nears, Embracing the memories I hold dear, Of Christmases old and those anew, For in this wonderful season, love shines through.

Merry Christmas
