Last Updated: 04 Mar 2024 @ 00:00 AM

This March, Auchtercrag is dedicating its focus to an essential aspect of resident care – fall prevention. Recognising the significant impact falls can have on the elderly; our comprehensive strategy is geared towards enhancing safety and promoting well-being.

"We understand that preventing falls is crucial for the overall health and independence of our residents," says Dionne Hotchkiss, Auchtercrag's Home Manager. Our dedicated team is committed to creating a safe and nurturing environment while addressing the multifaceted nature of fall risks."

Our approach is multi-pronged, starting with creating a safe physical environment, as outlined in our fall prevention materials. This includes ensuring areas are free of trip hazards and that necessities are within easy reach. Regular risk assessments are conducted to identify residents who may need extra support or modifications in their care plan.

"Incorporating the Live Link sensor technology has been a game-changer for us," notes Julie Stringfellow, Area Manager. "It enhances our ability to monitor at-risk residents effectively, especially those with higher fall risks. This technological aid complements our hands-on approach, ensuring a cohesive strategy for fall prevention."

The emphasis is also on regular colleague training and awareness, focusing on key areas like mobility, personal care, nutrition, and hydration—all critical factors in fall prevention. Moreover, initiatives such as the 4Ps (Personal Needs, Position, Placement, Prevent Falls) provide clear guidelines for individualised resident care.

Education and engagement extend to our residents and their families, highlighting the importance of staying active, wearing proper footwear, and understanding the role of medications in fall risks.

As part of Falls Focus Month, Auchtercrag is conducting special workshops and activities that emphasise strength and balance exercises, which are crucial in reducing the risk of falls. These activities are designed to be engaging and beneficial for all residents, regardless of their mobility levels.

Falls Focus Month at Auchtercrag is not just a campaign; it's a reinforcement of our ongoing commitment to providing exceptional care and ensuring the highest quality of life for our residents.
